"Food" is one of the basic needs of every living organism. In case of mankind, agriculture is the major source of food. More & more agricultural produce and innovations is a subject of challenge and research since ancient times. To get optimum & good quality agri-produce, efforts were taken and are being taken throughout the world.

One such part of these efforts was "green revolution". Use of artificial chemicals as fertilizers, pesticides & fungicides, use of more water, use of hybrid seeds, mono-cropping etc. were the basic requirements of this farming format. Soil was considered as a production machinery or tool of production. In the initial years of this system, yields were increased magically. Every farmer opted this system was very happy and excited about the results.

But, unfortunately, this enjoyment lasted for few years only. Later, this system started facing the serious adverse part of this revolutionary system. Over the few years, the health of soil started declining as so also the yields. The archive desired yields; it was unavoidable to use more & more chemicals, which resulted in more soil health loss. This vicious circle, finally, destroyed our environment and produced lot of ground & water pollution, non-productive salty dead soil. The unavoidable ultimate effect of this was collapse of agricultural economy, increase in input expenses, substantial yield loss. And worst effect was degraded quality of agri-produce, poisonous residues in produce and decreased shelf life.

Because of the conventional farming -

• Soil quality, texture& biological richness dropped down.
• Energy usage - conventional as well as non-conventional- is increased.
• Agro-pollution is increased much above safe levels.
• Environmental balance is collapsed.
• Quality of agri-produce is dropped down.
• Economics of agriculture is completely collapsed.

Because of all the severe ill-effects of this format of agriculture, developed countries restarted research on alternatives for this format. Research was carried out on large scale. Agri scientists and experts started research on old farming patterns from new end.

For us it is proud that, farming techniques developed and practiced by our forefathers was studied and reestablished with new labels such as natural farming, biodynamic farming, organic farming and soon.

In every format of organic farming, the main motive is to improve soil quality & texture, to amplify biological activity & diversity in the soil, to make soil live and to maintain c:n ration. In alternate farming format, soil bio-diversity, organic matter, air, water and minerals are the major factors of concern & consideration.

The organic agricultural movement was started in 1924 and now it is recognized & accepted all over the world as it is having more consistent advantages over any other format of farming. Considering increasing popularity of organic farming all over the world, our government has also taken effective steps to promote organic farming over here. From 1st October 2001, it was made mandatory to take certificate from competitive authority to export produce as organic. On 26th July 2002 �ndia Organic" logo was standardized. Ministry of commerce has announced "National Program For Organic Production (NPOP)" on 8th may 2003. The main motive of NPOP is to promote organic agriculture in India and to support development of brands international recognition.
